Religion

Our school is a mission of our congregation utilized to teach the word of God’s Law and Gospel. Our goal for religious education is that all of our students and their families will know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, what He has done for us through His life, death and resurrection, and what He gives us through His precious Word and blessed Sacraments.

Reading/Literature

As part of the mission of our school, the written Word is used daily to teach Christ as our Savior.
We believe that there are two important goals for our reading program. One is to give our students every opportunity to become good readers. The other is to instill a lifelong love of reading the Word, which will become a part of them and enable them to be witnesses to others. Reading is a basic skill necessary for students to become successful in all future academic endeavors. Our phonics based approach is an integral part of our curriculum.

Grammar and Composition

The ability to write and to speak correctly and effectively is not only a necessity for students of English, but is also a prerequisite for succeeding in other school courses including the sciences, social studies and mathematics. Proper use of vocabulary and spelling is also a necessity for success of future endeavors in this world as children of Christ.

Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum is one that challenges our students to become successful in applying mathematical concepts to their daily lives. Areas of instruction include concepts, computation, problem-solving skills, and critical/logical thinking skills. The use of manipulative helps our younger students visualize and internalize important concepts. Math concepts range from basic
skills through Algebra.

Social Studies

The goal of our Social Studies curriculum is to enable our students to view the world from a Christian perspective. Students will be encouraged to value all peoples in the world as part of God’s creation. This prepares students to live and work in the community. Through studying the social sciences, students can see where they fit into God’s creation and how they might best serve God and other people.

Science

An important goal of science is to teach the wonder of God’s creation. All science taught at Our Savior is taught from the perspective that God is Creator and the laws of science flow from His creative and preserving power. Through laboratory work, observation, and lectures in earth science, biological science, and physical science, students learn the facts of science and appreciate God’s control of all things in nature.

Computer and Technology

Many aspects of technology are important in our society today. It is our goal to use technology as a tool for good stewardship of time and talents. These tools can help our students to learn more effectively and our teachers to instruct the students efficiently.

Music Education

It is our goal to provide our students with a thorough foundation and mastery in music literacy and choral performance. They will be instructed in what we believe and confess as Lutherans, which will prepare them to serve in our congregation and the Church at large.

Art Education

We use art as a means of visual communication. We use it to express our thoughts, beliefs and values. Art education provides an understanding of human experiences and a means for learning to respect others’ ways of thinking and expressing themselves. It also provides an expressive and analytical method of problem-solving and a mode of communicating personal thoughts as a vehicle for self-expression.

Physical Education

Physical education is an integral part of our curriculum. The Lord has given each child different gifts and we strive for development and application of body control, endurance, team concepts, fairness, and fun. The body is a “temple of the Holy Spirit” and is to be instructed accordingly.

Foreign Language

We have an instructional partnership with the World Language Department of Eastern Michigan University in a pilot German immersion language program for Preschoolers through 8th Grade.
